Stonegrave Minster
Saturday 10th January 2015 Stonegrave
When I think of Minsters, I have in my mind big Chuches, like York Minster or Beverley Minster. This is Stonegrave Minster - not a big Church! Located between Malton and Helmsley on the B1257 road, the Minster is immediately in front of you when travelling towards Helmsley just off the apex of a bend in the village of Stonegrave. I have driven this road for years and often thought about stopping and having a look, but never bothered - until today. A Minster was originally an Anglo Saxon type of Monastery. Stonegrave has a long history, there is a record showing its existence in 757AD when Pope Paul l wrote to King Eadberht of Northumberland about the appointment of an Abbot. The Minster has been re-built on a number of occasions.
