Enclosure rites

'Enclosure rites'

Sunday 4th January 2015  Wintringham

On a very cold frosty morning walked part of the 'Wolds Way' from Wintringham village. A short, but very steep climb takes you to the top of the Wolds and to this very interesting sculpture. The sculptor Jony Easterby took inspiration from the archaeology in the area. It consists of a type of Neolithic 'henge' monument and 'Avenue' of posts. Three henge monuments were discovered in the Vale of Pickering at Heslerton (which in prehistoric times was on the edge of Lake Pickering), in the plain, just below the monument. Immediately beyond the henge is a large lined 'dew pond' (part of another sculpture) used throughout the Wolds to collect water, as rainwater drains through the chalk. In the extreme distance across the Vale of Pickering are the North York Moors.
